Yesterday afternoon the Vermont Youth Strings Orchestra performed for us. They were very talented and put on a great show!
This morning we worked on our Bird Books. Miss Julie gave us an extensive list of birds that live in Vermont and we are going to do our best to learn a little bit about each of these birds and illustrate them to look like a real bird.
This month in math we are learning about measurement. Here is a look at this months calendar and parts of Number Corner.
Next week Miss Pearl, Mrs. Walcott's student teacher, will be taking over and doing her leadership weeks. That means Miss Pearl will be doing more of the co-teaching with Mrs. Antonioli and Mrs. Walcott will be peeking through the windows to make sure everything is going well!
We also said goodbye to Ira today who is moving to India. We will miss her and hope she does well at her new school!

Yesterday we had Technology with Mrs. Courcelle and used the chrome books to learn about a new program called Starfall. This was a program that focused on literacy and had many different components that were educational and engaging. This can be accessed at home by going to www.starfall.com .
This morning we had a special guest, Miss Julie, come join us and teach us all about birds. We talked about several types of birds that we see here in South Burlington and we went outside to look for some of these birds in nature. She was a wealth of knowledge and we look forward to the next time she comes to teach us more!
Tuesday
This morning Mr. Aaron, from VEEP (Vermont Energy Education Program) came to do some science with us. We were all engineers and had to find a way to make shade for an animal using a wire tree and sticky notes. It was fun to watch and we have many thoughtful scientists!
Friday
This morning we learned about a new fundraising opportunity, selling Lake Monsters tickets for a game on July 8th @ 5:05! Champ came to visit as well to get everyone excited about this new opportunity!
Next week is also Parent/Teacher conference week! If you didn't get a paper back with your time please email you teacher ASAP! We look forward to seeing you.

100th Day fun in the classroom:
K/1 dance party and parade:
We have had MAAAANY sick friends over the last two week! Many fevers that seem to come on rather quickly. Wash hands, drink fluids and get a lot of rest this weekend!
Thursday
We hope everyone enjoyed the snow day yesterday! Today was all about 100th Day celebration preparations. We made our crowns for the parade and did a coloring/counting to 100 job.
This afternoon in math we used pattern blocks and the number 100!
Everyone is welcome to wear pajamas/comfy clothes for our 100th day festivities tomorrow!
Groundhog Day!
This morning was all about the groundhog. We learned about the 100+ year tradition in Punxsutawney, PA and how the ground will either see his shadow and we will have 6 more weeks of winter or he will not and we will have an early spring. We made groundhogs, made predictions and made a graph showing what we thought would happen. We then watched a short clip to see if he saw his shadow or not, and he did, 6 more weeks of winter here we come! We also added a new song to our Song & Poem binders.
We also have our February calendar up and running. So far the calendar pieces are "so easy" so we are wondering what will happen the rest of the month.
*100th Day!!!*
The 100th day is quickly approaching. If we don’t have any more snow days it will be on Thursday, 2/8. As part of the 100th day celebration, the K/1 students wear pajamas to school! Everyone is also welcome to bring a collection of 100 items in on Thursday BUT… it must fit in a gallon size ziplock bag!
Thank you to families that have donated to our 100th Day snack, we really appreciate it!
Let us know if you have any questions! Kaitie & Margo

This morning we worked a job that you will find in your child's report card envelope tomorrow telling you what they've learned in in kindergarten this year.
This morning a new friend, Miss Yoanna, and Mr. Kaulius came to tell us about a new student that is going to be joining Mrs. Walcott's class on Monday. Her name is Kaylie and what makes her special is that she has autism. She's going to have some new teachers with her in the classroom and her learning may look different than everyone else's but we are all ready to be kind, helpful and welcome her to our classroom. Let us know if you have any questions or your child is asking any questions you may not have answers to.
Miss Yoanna also shared a short video with us about people with autism and how their brains function on a daily basis. Here is the link if you're interested:

Wednesday
Today is the last day of January so we made sure to get our February calendars done today.
This afternoon we continued working with number bonds, 10 frames and number sentences.
The 100th day is also right around the corner (next Thursday) and we need a few supplies to make our 100th day snack. Be on the lookout for an email from our room parents to sign up and donate if you're able! THANKS!
Tuesday
This morning Mrs. Antonioli's class welcomed a new friend, Joshua. We are very excited to add him to our mix and everyone has been very kind and helpful!
This morning we worked with our magnet boards to stretch out and build words.
This morning we worked with our magnet boards to stretch out and build words.
This morning we also introduced "guest readers". A guest reader is one of our friends who reads a book from their book bag to the whole class. It's a book of his/her choosing that they feel confident reading. Day 1 went well!
We have been doing a lot of work with number bonds and that continued today. We used a paper that combined 10 frames, number bonds and number sentences!
Friday
We started our morning with an all school morning meeting. We did 'the wave' as a whole school which was really cool to see. This morning in the classroom we talked more about Wassily Kandinsky and how he was very inspired by music and when he heard music he saw different colors. We read a book, The Girl Who Heard Colors, and did a painting job while listening to music. We talked about how the music can make us feel/see different things and our paintings will reflect that. It was fun and we have some beautiful masterpieces!
We also started talking about the Olympics today and the different events that will be taking place in this years winter Olympics. If you have any expertise/knowledge in any Olympic events we would love to hear from you!!!
Thursday
This morning we used white boards to practice some sight words, word families and sentences. We also talked about and practiced a reading strategy 'Eagle Eyes'. Our eagle eyes look at the picture and help give us information about what the words say. Good readers always use the pictures to help them!
This afternoon in math we worked on number bonds and writing addition number sentences to match them. Everyone then went and made some of their own number bonds and number sentences.
KEYWORDS - we will only be doing Keywords on Thursday mornings now. If you are able to join us, 8:00- 8:30ish, we would love to have you!
Wednesday
This morning we worked on building words with our magnet boards. We are really good at hearing the sounds in words but the vowels are still tricky. They don't sound terribly different from one another but can drastically change a word.
We also spent some time being readers and writers!
We also spent some time being readers and writers!
In math we did a few more story problems and got Number Corner all caught up. Here's what our calendar is looking like this month:
Tuesday
Our new word of the week is 'at' and we talked about word families and how by changing one letter we can create a whole new word! We also spent some time with our book bags (we are up to 11 minutes) and used the magnet boards to build words.
Monday
We started our week off with our monthly Farm to School lesson. This month we learned about cabbage and sour kraut.
We also added a poem to our Song and Poem binders, read from our book bags and wrote in our writing journals. It was a very productive morning!
In math we are working really hard on solving word problems and solving them more independently. We have to make sure we always have 3 things when we solve them: a number sentence, math picture and an answer!
Here's our new poem and one of the word problems we solved today.

This week!
It was a bit of a crazy week, starting with no school on Monday and having the play yesterday! We've been working hard in between and trying to enjoy some of this more moderate winter weather.
'On' and 'look' were our new word wall words this week. Everyone's been doing a great job with their take home books. Thank you for taking the time to read them at home with your child! It makes a HUUUUUGE difference in their reading success.
In math we've continued working with word problems and making sure we have all 3 necessary parts when we solve them: a math picture, a number sentence and an answer.
January is also a huge assessment month for us. We assess everyone in both math and literacy to help us prepare to do report cards and to make sure everyone is getting what they need in kindergarten.
Our other big news is that Miss Pearl, Mrs. Walcott's student teacher, joined us full time. She will be with us this semester and we are very excited to have her here!
Have a great weekend!

Thursday
Today we celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. and all the hard work he did to make our country a better place. This morning the 4 kindergarten classes went together to the K Space where there were some high school students and fifth graders presenting about MLK Jr.
We ended our day with an all school assembly to wrap up what we learned this morning and sing some songs that Mrs. Frostman has been working on in music.
We also had two new additions to our classroom today. Mrs. Walcott's boys, Grady and Connor. Your kids were very welcoming and kind!

Tuesday (and the last week!)
We have been working hard since we got back from vacation, despite the frigid temperatures and not as much time outside as we would like!
Since vacation we have gotten our Writing Journals up and running. Everyone is doing a great job using their letter/sound knowledge to write about things they know and can do! We also love to share our writing with our friends and get suggestions on things we can add!
We have also been doing a lot of subitizing in math and explaining our math thinking and how we are seeing different combinations of numbers. We have also introduced number bonds which we will practice all month with our calendar pieces and combinations of colored buttons.

Welcome back! I'm sorry there' haven't been any posts recently. We've been very busy and trying to get back into our normal routines. Everyone is coming home with their Friday Folder today and inside is a Take Home Book for them to read at home. They've read it once at school with us and we've talked about what their job is with it at home. There's a paper in the bag explaining everything but if you have any questions, please ask!
We will have a much better blog post tomorrow!

Gingerbread Houses!
We had so much fun this morning building and creating some amazing houses! Thank you to the parents that joined us and to all of the families that donated supplies to make it possible!
Wednesday & Thursday
Yesterday we learned about a new artist, Wassily Kandinsky, and today we made our own Kandinsky inspired masterpieces. You can see them hanging in the hallway with their little artists.
Here is what we learned about him:

and here are our masterpieces in the making:
We've also been reading a lot, working really hard on our letter/sound knowledge and applying it to our writing and we learned a new math game, In and Out.
Tuesday
This morning we learned our two new sight words for the week, an and can. We read our new book, Can and practiced writing some sentences. Their handwriting is coming along! Ask your child to do some writing for you (and make their letters the correct way!). You should be impressed!
Winter has arrive so please make sure your child has ALL of their winter gear, EVERYDAY! This means they need: coat, snowpants, hat, gloves/mittens, boots and shoes for in the classroom. They're welcome to leave snowpants and shoes here if that makes it easier for you! We want to embrace these fun, snowy days but it's hard to spend a lot of time outside when everyone isn't dressed appropriately.
Monday
This morning we learned 4 new letters/sounds which only leaves us with 4 more left before we've done the whole alphabet! WOOHOO!!!
We also wrote thank you notes to Miss Meghan for the crayons/books that she gave us!
This afternoon we read a book about snowflakes and made some paper snowflakes with our buddies!
Friday
Today we said good bye to Miss Meghan. We have REALLY enjoyed having her all semester and will miss her terribly.
This morning we also had a special ukulele concert by some 5th graders from Chamberlin School. They played and sang several songs for us and answered many questions that we had!
Thursday
This morning Mrs. Walcott's friends had Farm to School (Mrs. Antonioli's friends went on Tuesday) and made curried acorn squash soup. It was very flavorful but several of them loved it and many of them were brave enough to try it. We also talked about different colored foods and how they are helpful to our bodies.
Today in math we used our drop sticks again and recorded our totals and a number sentence to match.
DON'T FORGET... tomorrow is an early release day and students are dismissed at 12:30!!!!
Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday
This week in liteacy we have 3 new letters/sounds, a new sight word and a new sight word book. Today we worked on writing some sight words and really focused on making sure we have spaces between our words. We talked about how without spaces it's very hard to read what we write. We also wrote a few sentences and practiced stretching out our sounds in order to write what we hear.
Our calendar this is all about a teddy bear and where he's positioned around a box. Here's what we've discovered so far:
We also have a paper chain and are counting down the days until vacation. Today we learned about a new math tool, drop sticks. They are popsicle sticks with dots on each side of them. One side has 1 dot and the other side has 10 dots. Right now we are dropping 4 at a time and figuring out how many dots we have. We will keep adding sticks and eventually be up to 10. This helps us practice sorting, counting by 10's and counting on by 1's. After we have some practice with them we will use them to start playing games with our friends.
Don't forget.... Friday is an early release day! Students are dismissed at 12:30! Please let us know if your child's after school plan will be different that their normal Friday plan!
Friday
This morning we had some South Burlington High School athletes join us at our all school morning meeting. They talked about the importance of being involved in the community and extra curricular activities at school. They then led us through some stretching and exercises. When assembly was done one of the athletes came back to our class to read to us during snack time.
Next week, Monday and Tuesday, Mrs. Walcott and Mrs. Antonioli will not be here. We are headed to a Kindergarten conference in Nashua, NH. Everything will be the same as far as schedules and routines here, we just won't be implementing them. If there are any major changes in your child's day, please let the office know!!!
Have a great weekend!
Have a great weekend!
Wednesday
This morning Miss Meghan did a lesson on ways we can help make our community/state/world a better place. We read about book about 10 simple things we can do to help make our world a better place, like: turn off the water when brushing your teeth, use recycling around the house to make new toys, walk to school and plants seeds.
This afternoon in math Miss Meghan read us a story about bugs and addition. We then used 10 frames to show the addition and figure out how many bugs we had and how many more we would need to make 10.
Monday & Tuesday
Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed some time off!
This week in literacy we've been talking about what it means to be an "independent" reader and we've been practicing reading independently with our book bags.

Miss Meghan has taken over math instruction for this week and today we used ten frames and unifix cubes to work on subtraction.
Thursday
This morning we had our monthly Farm to School lesson and learned all about root vegetables. We got to make and try roasted carrot and golden beats with a balsamic and honey glaze. It was delicious and MANY of the kids liked it as well!
Wednesday
This morning we worked on our letter formation and did a mapping job with Miss Meghan.
This afternoon in math we played 10 frame BINGO. I put a 10 frame on the screen and they had to find and mark the numeral on their game board.
Monday & Tuesday
Yes! Tomorrow, Wednesday, is pajama day and everyone is invited to wear their favorite pajamas/comfy clothes to school tomorrow!

Miss Meghan's Trip to South Africa
During this past summer, I (Miss Meghan) worked for a non-profit organization in Cape Town, South Africa. While I was there, I spent one month working at a local school, mentoring and teaching two ten year old boys. This being an exciting and eye opening adventure in my life, I wanted to find a way to share it with your children while also incorporating the reading and writing skills the children are currently learning in the classroom. I presented a slide show to the children, showing them images of the students I worked with, the school I was teaching at and where I stayed. I shared with the children how after working with the two young boys, I went on a safari with my family in another part of South Africa. I explained to them what a safari is and my experience with my family on the safari. I then showed them images of various animals that I saw, such as elephants, buffalo, birds, warthogs, giraffes, lions and a few others.
After showing the images to your children, each child wrote a sentence with three of our sight words ("I", "see", and "the") and then they were given the choice to write one of the animal names to finish their sentence. They then drew a picture of the animals they chose to match their sentence. They worked really hard and did their best work! Their work will be sent home in their Friday Folders for you to see.
Friday
This morning we made a Thanksgiving bracelet to help us tell the story of Thanksgiving. Each bead on the bracelet represents an event leading up to the big celebration. Ask your child to re-tell the story using their bracelet. There's also a copy of it in their Friday Folder.
We also did another Jackson Pollock project. We sat in a big circle and everyone got a piece of paper and one marker. They had 5 seconds to use their marker before having to pass it to the right. Everyone did a great job and ended up with a colorful masterpiece.
Thursday
This morning we finished our Thanksgiving place mats that we started yesterday. We will have them laminated and send them home next week. We've been talking about the first Thanksgiving, who was involved, how they helped each other and what they did together. Here's some pictures from our place mat making:
Miss Meghan is getting ready to take over and do her two solo weeks so you may hear that Mrs. Antonioli isn't in school. We promise that she's still here, working hard, but she may not be as visible in the classroom in order to let Miss Meghan have a true "student teaching" experience.
Tuesday
This morning was our first Tuesday doing Keywords and it went well! Some friends even finished working on their name and are onto their second word.
During literacy we reviewed all of the letters we've learned about thus far, practiced writing our new letters, 'g' and 'o', talked more about what good readers do, added a new word to our word wall, 'my' and read our new 'My' book.
In math we continued working with our number racks and being able to explain the different strategies we used to build certain numbers, whether it was seeing all 5 red beads together, and counting on the white, counting each bead or knowing how many would be left over and not moved. There were many strategies used and it was great to hear everyone begin to explain their math thinking.
Monday
This morning we learned all about Keywords because starting tomorrow every Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8-8:30 we will be doing Keywords to start our day. There are many different stations set up between the two rooms where students go to build/write the word that they are working on. Everyone's first word is his/her name but after that teachers and students take turns picking the new word they want to work on.
This is also a great time for parents to get into the classroom if that's something you're interested in. You don't need to commit to every week/day, just come when it works with your schedule! We hope to see many of you throughout the year!

This afternoon in math we learned a lot more about our calendar and 3-D shapes. We know part of the pattern is 2-D, 3-D, 2-D, 3-D and we learned about 3 different 3-D shapes (cube, sphere and cylinder).
We also used number racks today to show numbers between 1 and 10,

Friday, 11/10, is another early release day and kids will be released at 12:30. This also means that the lunch choices are a bag lunch from the cafeteria (cheese sandwich or bagel) and we need to order them by Wednesday. Please let us know ASAP if your child will need a bag lunch on Friday. Thanks!
Happy Friday!
This morning we learned all about the artist 'Action' Jackson Pollock. He loved to paint and made very large paintings where he actively threw, dropped and splattered paint all over the canvas. We did our own Pollock renderings in the hallway this morning!
Wednesday
This morning we talked more about what readers do and know.
Everyone also got their own book bag which had the two books that we've read together so far. In the next few weeks everyone will start to get books for their bag that are just right for them. We talked about and practiced what it looks like to read from our book bags independently. Everyone did a GREAT job!
In math we got our November calendar up and running! We knew there was a square and a cube but are still undecided if there's more to our pattern or not. Here's what it looks like:
We also spent some time creating number sentences that equaled 4 (because today was the 44th day of kindergarten).
Thank you to all the families that have gotten back to us in regards to conferences. We will send home your day and time tomorrow so you're able to plan ahead! If we haven't heard from you yet we will put another sign up sheet in your child's Friday Folder tomorrow.
Tuesday
This morning we talked a lot about books and what readers must do to read them. Here's what we know:
-you have to look at the words
-the words and the pictures need to match
-what we say needs to match the words
-there are spaces between words
-letters make up words
-you have to look at the words

-letters make up words
We've also been working hard on writing our names using only 1 capital letter and the rest lowercase.
This afternoon we did a Halloween dice game in math. We rolled the dice, and colored a pumpkin that matched that number. We also had to roll a dice, write the numeral and cross out that number of objects.
Happy Halloween!
We had a great morning sewing in kindergarten! Thank you to all of our parents that came in to help, we would not have been successful without all of your help! Here are some pictures from our fun morning:
We carried our pumpkin theme into math and did some cutting and sequencing of pumpkins.
Thank you to families who have gotten back to us about times for Parent/Teacher conferences. If you could have the back by Friday, we would really appreciate it. We will send home your scheduled time in this weeks Friday Folder.
KEYWORDS- we will beginning keywords next week, 11/7. Keywords will be every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8-8:30. If you're available to come, any day, we love the extra hands! Let us know if you have any questions and make sure your volunteer paperwork is complete!

Friday
This morning we had our All School Morning Meeting where we got to see our Book Buddies again and watch a presentation by the 2nd graders about UNICEF. Everyone has a UNICEF box in their Friday Folder today and are welcome to collect money to bring back to school.
We got to spend some time in the woods and add to our journals.
This afternoon in math we talked a lot about tens and how each decade has a new name (very confusing!).
We also sent home Parent/Teacher Conference sign ups. The sooner we get them back the sooner we can let you know when your conference is. We look forward to meeting with all of you!
Have a great weekend!

Thursday
This morning Mrs. Walcott's friends had their monthly Farm to School lesson (Mrs. Antonioli's friends went earlier this week). We got to make and try a kale and swiss chard saute with lemon, garlic and currants. Some were braver than others but most at least tried it! While my class was learning about vegetables, Mrs. Antonioli's friends were busy practicing their BEST writing!
We also worked on November calendars which will go home tomorrow.
Wednesday
This morning we officially got our Word Wall up and running. Everyone's name is on the wall and we've added our first word 'a'.
This morning Miss Meghan also taught a great lesson on how we are all helpers in our community/school/house and we brainstormed a list of things we do that make us helpers everyday. Everyone traced their own hands, water colored them and we are going to put them on a poster with all the ways that we are helpers everyday. We also added 'Five Little Pumpkins' to our song/poem binders this morning.
Pumpkin prep began for our sewing project next Tuesday. Kids started to lay out their jack-o-lantern face so their pumpkins will be ready to sew next week. We would love parents/volunteers to join us so if you're available we will be sewing at 9:00 on Tuesday morning (make sure your volunteer paperwork is filled out beforehand!).
This afternoon we did some different Halloween activities with our Book Buddies. We played BINGO, did word searches and mazes, colored and played memory. It was a lot of fun!
Tuesday
This morning we reviewed our letter/sounds and two new letters, 'c' and 'a'. We also made a book about fall which will go home on Friday.
We also finished our Number Books during math today!
Book orders also arrived yesterday so if you ordered anything you will find it in your child's backpack today!
We will place one more book order in early December before our winter break!

We talked a lot about Pushy Purple and how s/he always has to go first when making letters.
We've also been talking a lot recently about what good readers do... for example, they look at the words, they use the pictures to help them, they point to the words, they know that we put letters together to make words etc. and this morning we all read a book together.
This afternoon in math we began Number Books. Each page is a different number with a space for them to practice writing that number and then a box where they need to draw something that contains the same number of objects that match that number.
COMING UP....We need your help!
We have a Halloween sewing project next week that we would love as many hands on deck as possible. Each child will be sewing a jack-o-lantern pillow to take home. We will be doing this on TUESDAY, 10/31, at 9:00. It usually lasts about an hour. Please let your child's teacher know if you are coming so we can make groups accordingly.

Here are some things we've done:
*Painted our falling oil pastel leaves
*Did an apple taste test - we tried red, green and yellow apples and everyone filled out a page which is in today's Friday Folder
*Learned about the difference between wants and needs
*Learned about two new letter, "m" and "n"
*Explored 5 frames and combinations of 5
*Counting by 10's and counting on from any number (not always starting at 1)
*Number writing, lots of number writing practice - ALWAYS START AT THE TOP!
*Did a Fire Safety sort - hot and not hot
*Played outside with our Book Buddies
WE DO NOT HAVE SCHOOL THURSDAY AND FRIDAY THIS WEEK! Enjoy the beautiful weather and we will see everyone again on Monday, 10/23.
Fun Run!
We had an AMAZING morning at the First Annual Orchard Fun Run! Thank you to all the families and parents that came out to cheer all of our runners on! Here are some pictures from our great morning:
Book orders have been placed, hopefully they arrive quickly and we will send them home as soon as we get them!
Have a great weekend and we will see everyone next week!
REMEMBER... there is NO SCHOOL NEXT THURSDAY AND FRIDAY (10/19 & 10/20)!

Thursday
This morning Miss Meghan read us a book about community and we talked about all the different places that make up our community. After we brainstormed a lengthy list of places in our community everyone was assigned a different place and had to decorate a paper bag with that place. We then placed them along a road to represent our community.
We also practiced our t's, b's and f's. We ALWAYS start at the top and pull DOWN!
Last chance to place a Book Order! I will be placing the Book Order tomorrow afternoon so if you would like to place one! Go to www.scholastic.com/readingclub and our class code is L44WY.
Wednesday
Walk to School day this morning was a success! It was great to start the day with some fresh air and a little exercise!
This morning we started a fall leaf project. Everyone traced several leafs on a long white rectangle and then began coloring them in with oil pastels. We will do part 2 of the project tomorrow.

Tuesday
This morning we introduced 3 letters of the alphabet. We use a program called Fundations to teach letter/sound. Today we introduced b, t and f. Every letter has it's own card with a picture that begins with that letter ( F- fun, B- bat, T- top) and every letter also has a visual cue that goes along with it as well. For example, for the letter B we say, "B, bat, /b/, /b/, /b/" and repeat the sound 3 times. The repetition used along with the visual cues helps students learn their letter/sounds quickly and begin applying them to their reading and writing jobs.
Today in math we explored dice and did a single die mandala. Ask your child if they remember what the dots on a die are called!
Tomorrow, 10/11, is Walk to School day! Your child will be picked up by the bus as usual but the bus will not bring them directly to school. They will drop them off at a designated location where teachers will be waiting for them and we will all walk to school together. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to be outside for at least 30 minutes tomorrow morning. The walk to school shouldn't take that long but we then wait for everyone to arrive on the track. If you normally drop your child off at school they will proceed to the track to walk while they wait for everyone else.
Monday!
We hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed some more beautiful weather!
This morning was all about Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom and the letters in our names. Everyone made their own coconut tree and had to find all of the letters in their name. There was a huge pile of letters in the middle of meeting and they had to sort through and find the letters they needed.

This afternoon in math we talked more about patterns and everyone made a few patterns of their own.
We have finally figured out the pattern on our October calendar and everyone is quite good at making predictions about what's to come!
Wednesday/Thursday
Sorry about no post yesterday, sometimes the day gets away from us!
Here are some pictures from the last two days:

Don't forget... tomorrow is an early release day and kids are dismissed at 12:30!!!
Tuesday
This morning Miss Meghan read a snack story about fall and leaves and to begin literacy we illustrated a poem about leaves and added it to our Song & Poem Binders.
We also did our October calendars which was a big job and took us right through Quiet Time into math to finish. They look great and you will see them on Friday!
Monday
As soon as everyone walked in the door this morning we got right to work... cutting apples! We cut up two huge bowls of apples this morning and made some delicious applesauce for afternoon snack!
Our Literacy job this morning was making a recipe page for the applesauce which will go into our Kindergarten cookbook!
In math we changed calendar to October. We know that the pieces have something to do with maple leaves, but we haven't figured out what our new pattern is yet!
Happy Friday!
This morning we had assembly where we sat with our buddies and every wing of the school got to sing a song they'd been working on in music. The K/1's sang Wheels on the Bus!
After snack, Miss Meghan taught us about what a neighborhood is. Everyone then drew their own neighborhood.

In math we played a game called Beat You To Five. It was teachers vs students and the first team to get 5 unifix cubes won. We talked a lot about what it mean to be a winner vs. a loser and how we act when both of those things happen. Everyone was a good sport and the kids won, taking 2 out of 3 games!
Mrs. Beeli, our Guidance Counselor, is also starting her "kindergarten friendship groups". Over the next several months every kindergartners will have several opportunities to go with Mrs. Beeli and a few of their friends to play in her Guidance space. If you have any questions about this please let us know!
Looking ahead.... next Friday, 10/6, is an early release day and students will be dismissed at 12:30!

Thursday
This morning we did a job with the first letter in everyone's name. They cut out their letter and completed their paper by adding their name. Then we did our first song for our song/poem binders that we will create throughout kindergarten.
This afternoon in math we returned to our 10 frames and everyone practiced building 1-10 with their own cubes and frames. We want them to automatically see the five and then continue counting on to figure out how many there are.
There's still time to place a book order if you're interested! Go to scholastic.com/readingclub and our class code is L44WY.
Hackett's!
We had a fantastic morning at the apple orchard! We have a TON of pictures to show you what we did! Thank you to the parents that were able to join us, it was great to have you! And thank you to Jennifer Bliss for contributing some amazing photos!
Tuesday
Apple mania continued this morning and we did another apple project/poem.
Today in math we began using 10 frames. We went through them, identified them, built them with our math hands and tomorrow we will build them on 10 frames.
Our final reminder...
Don’t Forget…
TOMORROW, 9/27, we are going to Hackett’s in South Hero. Everyone will need a lunch and drink from home and we will have morning snack before we leave! It’s supposed to be very warm again, sunscreen in the morning would be helpful! Parents are welcome to join us, IF your volunteer paperwork is complete! You may take the bus with us (please be here by 8:50) or may drive and meet us up there (around 9:20/9:30).
THANKS!

This week is all about apples in preparation for our field trip on Wednesday. This morning everyone made their apple name tag for our trip and did an apple coloring/counting/number writing job.
This afternoon in math everyone got to play Spill the Beans! They dropped their beans and then recorded the number of red beans they had.
This summer weather is lovely but by the afternoon it's quite warm in our classroom! If you can send your child with a water bottle it's helpful to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
We also have our field trip on Wednesday. Please let us know if you are able to join us!

We started out our day with an All School Morning Meeting.
This morning in the woods we talked about what it meant to be a scientist and everyone got to be a scientist and explore our outdoor classroom. We had magnifying glasses, tweezers, diggers and scoopers to help us explore.
In math we learned about a game that we will play next week, Spill the Beans. Everyone gets 5 beans, you shake them up in your hands, drop them on the table and record the number of beans that are red on the recording sheet. This will help us practice our number writing and begin to see combinations of five.
Have a great weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

Thursday
A few pictures from our Book Buddies yesterday!
This morning Mrs. Walcott's friends had Farm to School where we learned all about the garden and tomatoes. Everyone got to sample some homemade salsa made fresh from the garden.
Wednesday
This morning Mrs. Walcott's friends talked about where they live and how we all live in homes that are different. Some of us live in houses, some in apartments or condos. Then everyone drew their house and told me a little about their picture.
Today during math we practiced some number writing. We practiced, 1's, 2's and 4's. We began with a lengthy conversation about what we can do when things are hard and making mistakes. Everyone had a VERY positive outlook on making mistakes and did their best even when it was really hard and tricky!
We also got to see our Book Buddies today which we always LOVE!
Tuesday
This morning we used white boards and began working on various lines that will be beneficial with letter and number formation. We stressed the importance of starting at the top of these lines and using the lines on the board as a guide for where to start and stop.
This morning our Snack Stories were all about cooperation. After our white board job we did a cooperative art project using the community paper we made last week. Each class made a poster using Henri Matisse's cut paper technique.
This week in math we have been sorting using different attributes. We have used our shoes as the sorting object and have found many ways to sort them (laces/no laces, sneaker/not sneaker, blue/not blue, etc).
Monday!
It was a good Monday to be in Kindergarten! This morning we learned all about Choice Time which meant we got out A LOT of toys in the classroom. Ask your child where they went during Choice Time today!
We still have many empty picture frames for family photos and several kids without a Kissing Hand on their cubby. If you need another hand to decorate please let us know!
Happy Friday!
We've made it through another week of Kindergarten and everyone did well even thought we had a funky schedule today! Mrs. Antonioli's friends got to play in the woods for a little while this morning, but it was VERY buggy so Mrs. Walcott's friends will have to find an extra time next week.
Everyone got to have lunch in the classroom today which was fun for a change!
Have a great weekend, enjoy the beautiful weather and we will see everyone on Monday morning!
Thursday
This morning we did some more work with Henri Matisse. We filled out an information piece about him and focused on how his friends also contributed to and helped him create his art work. In preparation for a class community art project we painted a BUNCH of paper today. Next week we will use it to create a large masterpiece together as a class.
This afternoon in math we learned about and explored a new tool that we will use a lot in kindergarten, white boards!
Don't forget! Tomorrow is an early release day and kids will be dismissed at 12:30. We will have morning snack and lunch at school tomorrow!
Wednesday!
This morning everyone drew a picture of their family and we will turn them into a book about our families!
We also talked about and practiced a fire drill in our classrooms this morning. We stressed the importance of being quiet and calm so adults can keep everyone safe! They did a great job!
Mother Nature loves us right now, so we enjoyed a few extra minutes outside before recess today!
Mother Nature loves us right now, so we enjoyed a few extra minutes outside before recess today!
This afternoon in math everyone got a 5 frame, 5 cubes and we practiced building our numbers 1-5. I flashed 5 frames, numeral cards and math hands which they were able to quickly build! We want them to see a 5 frame and automatically know what number it is without having to count all the dots. Once we've mastered the 5 frame we will move onto a 10 frame.
We got to end our day with our Book Buddies and getting to learn more about each other!
Tuesday...
Mr. Kaulius, our Kindergarten Special Educator, joined us this morning and taught us all about "Listening Larry". Larry is a great listener and listens with his WHOLE BODY. This is something we will keep referencing as we move throughout kindergarten.
Every month in Kindergarten students will make a self portrait. Today we did Septembers portraits and they look great! For some reason, some are still sideways... SORRY!
Monday!
We hope everyone had a great weekend and got to enjoy the beautiful weather!
This morning Picture Day took up a lot of our morning and forced us to be flexible when it came to our normal schedule. Everyone got their picture taken and they're going to be GREAT!
Our big project for today was one that had to do with our first names. Everyone got a black piece of construction paper with their name written on it and had to tear small pieces of colored paper to cover the writing. They're almost done and look great!

Thursday & Friday
Here are some pictures from Book Buddies yesterday. These are Mrs. Walcott and Mrs. Bahrenburg's friends. We will be sure to get some of Mrs. Antonioli's Book Buddies next week!
Yesterday we also got many loose ends tied up and various projects hung up around the room and hallways.
This morning after our assembly we got to spend some time in the woods before it started to rain. We emphasized team work today and were so impressed by how well they work together in the woods with minimal adult intervention.
Mrs. Walcott's friends got to quickly meet their Book Buddies this morning and got matched up with a 5th grader to work with for the year.
This week in math we've been doing a lot of work with our math hands, five frames and numbers to 5. These are what our five frames look like:
We have also figured out the pattern on our calendar this month so we are very good at predicting what will come next.
DON'T FORGET... Monday is picture day! Our time is around 9:00 so we will take pictures before we eat snack!
We also have an early release day on Friday, 9/15. Kids will be dismissed at 12:30 and we will be having morning snack and lunch!
Thank you to families that were able to attend Curriculum Night last night. If you weren't able to make it you will receive the packet we sent home in today's Friday Folder.

This morning we started brainstorming a list of our "Hope and Dreams" and things we want to learn about in Kindergarten. We will do a little more work with this list tomorrow! We also made Chester from The Kissing Hand and they look great. They are all hanging in the hallway outside of our classrooms.
We also learned about a famous artist today, Henri Matisse. Everyone made their own paper cut masterpieces and they look GREAT!
We also got to meet our 5th grade Book Buddies in Mrs. Bahrenburg's class today. The pictures haven't come through yet so look for them on tomorrows post!
DON'T FORGET.... tomorrow, Thursday, 9/7, is Curriculum Night. We will be meeting in Mrs. Walcott's classroom from 6:00-6:30 to go over what we will be covering in kindergarten this year and answering any questions you may have. We hope you can make it!

We also got to have a short Choice Time where everyone got to choose between puzzles, books, blocks and drawing!
Friday!
Can you believe our first week of Kindergarten is over!?!
Every Friday morning at Orchard we have an All School Morning Meeting in the gym. The whole school comes together and we start our day by acknowledging birthdays, singing songs and doing different activities. This morning we introduced all of our new friends at Orchard. All of our new students, kindergarteners included, got a bracelet to welcome them to Orchard. Our 5th graders got to hand each kindergartner a bracelet. Here are some pictures from Morning Meeting:

We had another great day and I think we are sending home some very tired children today!
This morning we reread the Kissing Hand , learned a new song to go along with the story and everyone colored a hand with a heart in it.

This afternoon we read Listen Buddy and everyone made their own listening ears! You should see them in their backpack tonight.
We also had time to play outside and enjoy this beautiful weather!
OUR FIRST DAY!
We did it! Our first day of Kindergarten is in the books and it was great! Here's a brief overview of what we did and some pictures to see what it looked like.
This morning we had a Morning Meeting, had snack with everyone, learned all about the playground and played outside. After lunch and recess we read some books, explored with pattern blocks, made pictures for our Friday Folders, had snack and played outside!
Please let us know if anything came up for your child today that we should be aware of (lunch, bathroom, playground, etc).
